The Woman in Me: Britney Spears’ new Memoir

Britney Spears' anticipated new memoir will be released on October 24 and is already available for preorder. The book is described by the publishing company, Gallery Books as, “a brave and astonishingly moving story about freedom, fame, motherhood, survival, faith, and hope.”

The title of her book The Woman in Me is a reference to the lyrics in her 2001 song “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” where the singer says, “I'm not a girl, don't tell me what to believe / I'm just tryin' to find the woman in me.” This theme is important to the narrative, as Spears will explore her journey with womanhood and, “freedom, fame, motherhood, survival, faith, and hope.”

The book will likely discuss the 13 years Spears spent in a court-ordered conservatorship orchestrated by her father Jamie Spears. The singer claims that she was stripped of her human rights, had no access to her money, and was forced to take drugs like lithium. Due to a fan-led social media movement entitled #FreeBritney, the singer was able to speak in court and end her conservatorship in November 2021.

Vice President of Gallery Books, Jennifer Bergstrom, told PEOPLE, “Britney’s compelling testimony in open court shook the world, changed laws, and showed her inspiring strength and bravery, I have no doubt her memoir will have a similar impact — and will be the publishing event of the year. We couldn’t be more proud to help her share her story at last.”

The Women in Me is expected to reveal Spears’ truth and her journey as a pop star. As said by Gallery Books, after years of being in a conservatorship, this memoir will show, “the importance of a woman telling her own story, on her own terms, at last.”
