Music is arguably one of the most important things in our culture. It allows us to cross language barriers with a feel-good tune or share messages from generations ago. It exposes and expresses our feelings and emotions when we don’t have the words to talk about them. From riot anthems to a sweet sixteen playlist, music plays a part in our everyday lives, no matter how big or how small the tune may be.
In movies and TV, it sets the tone. A scene of someone running can change so easily depending on the type of music behind it. It can go from a horror movie to a comedy in a split second all because of the music. It’s a love letter from the creator to the viewer, nodes of appreciation lacing with each song they picked for the scene they thought would be the most impactful, the most convicting. It’s a thank you for watching their characters grow and evolve through the music they pick.
It’s the idea of being able to share our culture with people across the world from us just because of music. It’s one of the first mediums that allowed us to connect with one another. It’s a wondrous thing how music has expanded and evolved from all those years ago. How so many people can come together to enjoy one band or one musician just because they made something to express themselves, that just happened to resonate with thousands of others.
Music helps create a story. It gives you a past, a present, and a future without you even realizing it. There are some songs from my childhood that I still know all the words to even though I haven’t heard them in years. Some musicians have their entire discography dedicated. Music is malleable, you can make it into anything you want, you just need an idea.
From Tiktok videos to the ride to work, music is a part of our everyday lives, something a lot of us take for granted. Without music we lose a form of communication- a way to connect with each other. We lose the ability to share our culture and livelihood. Music has always been so intertwined into our society that we don’t know how to live without it. It’s wild to think about, how different our lives would be without it, or maybe we wouldn’t be all that different without music.
